Professor of Wei XUE at Drug carrier laboratory, Institute of Biomedical Engineering, based at Jinan University (Shipai campus, Guangzhou, China). His research interests are in drug delivery and biomaterials...


Wei Xue obtained his Ph.D in Polymer and Biomaterials from University of Salford (UK) in 1999. His B.A. in Chemistry from the Jinan University (Chin) in 1985.

Two years as Postdoctoral in the Department of Applied Chemistry, University of Salford(UK), and then two years as Research Fellow in the School of Chemistry, Leeds University (UK). In 2002, Dr. Wei Xue was appointed as a Senior Research Fellow in Biomaterials at the Institute for Materials Research in Salford (UK). He returned to the Jinan University in China as a full Professor of Biomaterials in 2008, serving as Head of Institute of Biomedical Engineering from 2011 until now.

Before these, he worked at Institute of Guangzhou Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Science as a Lecturer from 1985 to 1993.

Wei has an extensive track record in Polymer and Biomaterials,in particualr in Hydrogels and Drug delivery, having published >150 papers (h-index 29; March 2018).

Drugs and gene carriers are the main research direction of my team. we mainly synthesize novel biomedical polymer materials carriers and study their targeting, sustained release, controlled release, degradation and safety evaluation.

Water soluble and crosslinked      thermo sensitive N-substituted      acrylamide polymers with higher lower critical solution (or swelling)      temperature (LCST) for oil industrial phase separation application; b).      Rapid environmental responsive cryogels of hydropholically modified      polyacrylamide; c).Preparation of biodegradeable dressing of poly      (ethylene oxide-co-actic acid) for wound healing; d). Study on the effect      of the small molecular on the enhancing separation temperature of poly      (ethylacrylamide); e). Preparation of poly (ethylene oxide)-grafted on      chitonsan for protein release; f). Developing hydrogels coating materials.

·Undertook EPSRC projects. The research involved the development of “hydrophobically modified polyacrylamides (PAM) and poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA)”. Three hydrophobically monomers (Dipropyl acrylamide; Dioctyl acrylamide; Didodecyl acrylamide) were synthesised, and then using free radical micellar polymerization to prepare hydrophobically modified PAM and PNIPA. The effect of temperature, hydrophobe content, surfactant sodium dodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and crosslinker concentration on the structure characterization and properties such as rheology, swelling / deswelling, responsive rate etc. were investigated.

·A novel two-step freezing polymerisation method was developed and used for acceleration the responsive rate of copolymeric cryogels.

·Undertook industrial (Polymer Laboratory UK) and EPSRC projects for development of novel separation systems and environmental fast responsive sensors based on using novel crosslinker and unique technique to prepare super absorbent thermo sensitive, fast swelling and deswellinghydrogels. The research results had been reported by the “American high-tech. materials alert” in the Jan. 12, 2001.
