主要从事藻类生理生态与生物技术等方面的研究，包括藻类光合作用，微藻营养生理与高密度培养技术，藻类高附加值生物活性物质的开发等。先后主持或参加了国家自然科学基金、科技部“973”“863”及省部级项目。在藻类两个光系统的结构与功能研究方面，特别是在管藻目绿藻和杂色藻类叶绿体大量制备、色素-蛋白复合物的分离、光谱特性分析、复合物的结构、功能和进化，以及叶绿素分子间相互作用等方面取得了一些创新性的研究成果，“藻类光合作用色素-蛋白质复合物研究”2001年获得山东省高校科学与技术进步一等奖（第一位）。发表相关学术论文70余篇。
